Blurring for privacy: what actually protects people

Blur the right things: faces of bystanders, license plates, house numbers, screens showing accounts, shipping labels, and anything with a name plus address. A common mistake is blurring a name in one place but leaving it visible in an email preview or reflection elsewhere in the frame — check the whole image.

Why real Gaussian blur is irreversible here

Pixelation (mosaic) can sometimes be reversed with dejpegifying tools when the grid is small; naive darkening can be reversed by levels adjustment. True Gaussian blur with a generous radius, however, mathematically destroys information — the export contains a weighted average of neighborhoods, and there is nothing left to recover. Use a radius large enough that text is not merely “hard to read” but unreadable (typically 15+ for screenshots at full resolution).

Blur as a design tool

Beyond privacy, Gaussian blur powers modern UI aesthetics: frosted-glass backgrounds (blur 30-60 + slight white overlay), depth-of-field looks for product photos, and soft backgrounds behind text overlays. For text readability, blur the background 8-12 px and darken it 20% — that combination passes contrast checks on almost any photo.

FAQ

Can I blur only part of an image?
Yes. Brush or rectangle-select the region to blur — useful for hiding faces, plates or personal info.
What blur strengths are available?
Adjustable Gaussian radius from subtle softening to full unrecognizability.
Can blurred regions be undone by others?
No. Heavy Gaussian blur is destructive — the original pixels are genuinely discarded in the export.
