Aspect ratios and where they matter
Every platform has its own preferred shape, and cropping to the right one avoids awkward automatic zooming or letterboxing.
| Ratio | Use case | Example pixels |
|---|---|---|
| 1:1 | Instagram feed, profile pictures, avatars | 1080 ร 1080 |
| 4:3 | Classic photos, presentations, print | 1600 ร 1200 |
| 16:9 | YouTube thumbnails, blog headers, slides | 1920 ร 1080 |
| 9:16 | Stories, Reels, TikTok, phone wallpapers | 1080 ร 1920 |
| 3:2 | DSLR photos, postcards | 1800 ร 1200 |
Crop for composition, not just size
A good crop rebalances a photo: cutting empty sky or dead space pulls the subject forward. Two quick principles โ keep the subject's eyes on the upper third line, and leave a little breathing room in the direction the subject faces. When cropping faces near an edge, leave more margin than feels necessary: platforms often apply their own tight crops on top of yours.
Cropping does not cost quality โ resizing does
Cropping removes pixels at the edge but never touches the remaining ones, so what stays is pixel-perfect. Resizing is different: enlarging interpolates new pixels (softening detail), and shrinking throws information away. If you need both, crop first at full resolution, then resize the crop โ doing it the other way around throws away pixels you might have kept.
