Image to JPG guide

When you need JPG and when you don't

JPG (historically JPEG) is the standard for photographs everywhere: job portals, government forms, real-estate listings and most CMS platforms expect it. Its lossy compression makes photos small. But JPG is the wrong target for screenshots with text (compression fuzzes the letters), images needing transparency, or artwork you plan to edit repeatedly.

If your source is PNG because you need sharp text or transparency, check whether WebP fits your use case first โ€” it keeps transparency and compresses better. Convert to JPG only when the receiving platform requires it.

How the conversion handles quality and size

Converting PNG to JPG always means flattening: transparent areas must become a solid color (white by default here). Beyond that, the encoder compresses with a quality factor you control โ€” 85-90 is visually indistinguishable from the original for photos.

Privacy: why browser-side conversion matters

Converting images of ID cards, contracts or medical records through a typical converter site means uploading them to somebody else's server. Here the entire pipeline โ€” decode, flatten, re-encode โ€” runs in your browser with JavaScript and canvas. No network request carries your image, which you can verify in the browser's network inspector.

FAQ

What happens to transparent backgrounds?
JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas become white or a background color you choose. Use PNG if you need to keep transparency.
Will conversion lose quality?
JPG is a lossy format, so there is slight quality loss โ€” usually invisible to the eye. For best results set quality to 90 or above.
Can I convert multiple images at once?
Yes. Select multiple images for batch conversion and download them all as a ZIP.
