What PNG is actually for
PNG stores every pixel exactly — it is a lossless format. That makes it the correct choice for screenshots, logos, icons, line art and any image containing text, where lossy formats blur edges. It also supports alpha transparency, so a converted logo can sit on any background color.
The flip side: photographs balloon in PNG. A 500 KB JPG can easily become 5 MB as PNG because photographic noise defeats PNG's compression. Converting photos to PNG is almost always a mistake — use it for graphics.

Converting HEIC photos from iPhones
Since 2017, iPhones store photos as HEIC by default. Windows before Windows 11 and many web services still cannot open HEIC, which is why "convert HEIC to PNG/JPG" is such a common search. This tool decodes HEIC in your browser and re-encodes to PNG losslessly — or to JPG/WebP if size matters more.
Tip: if you want your iPhone to stop producing HEIC, Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible switches future photos to JPG.
A note on "increasing" quality
Converting a compressed JPG to PNG does not restore lost quality — the blur and artifacts are baked in. PNG's losslessness only means no NEW loss from that point on. For archival purposes, converting JPG to PNG makes sense when you plan to annotate or re-save repeatedly; otherwise it just wastes disk space.
