Why WebP wins for websites
WebP was developed by Google and released in 2010, and it is now supported by every major browser. It consistently produces files 25-35% smaller than JPEG at equivalent visual quality, and it supports both lossy and lossless compression plus an alpha channel — capabilities that previously required choosing between JPG and PNG.
For a site serving 100,000 image views a month at an average saving of 200 KB per image, that is 20 GB of avoided bandwidth — faster pages for visitors and lower data costs for the operator.
| Format | Quality setting | Typical size |
|---|---|---|
| JPEG | 85 | 850 KB |
| WebP | quality 80 (≈ JPEG 85 visually) | 560 KB |
| PNG | lossless | 9 MB |
| WebP lossless | — | 5.5 MB |
