What makes a password strong in 2026
Strength against brute force is length times variety. Each added character multiplies the search space; each added character class multiplies it again. A 12-character random mix of letters+digits+symbols today stands about the same chance a 8-character one did a decade ago — hardware marches on. The practical floor for anything you care about: 16 characters, mixed sets, fully random.
| Length | Letters only | Letters + digits + symbols |
|---|---|---|
| 8 chars | Minutes | Days |
| 12 chars | Centuries | Millions of years |
| 16 chars | Astronomical | Effectively unbreakable |
Randomness: why the source matters
Passwords from Math.random() or human imagination are weaker than they look — humans avoid “hard-to-remember” combos and JS pseudo-randomness is predictable in principle. This generator uses the browser's Web Crypto API (crypto.getRandomValues), the same class of entropy used for TLS keys, and it runs locally: the password exists only on your screen, never on a server log.
Passphrases vs passwords
For your password-manager master password or anything typed by hand daily, a 4-5 word random passphrase (correct-horse-battery style) offers similar entropy with far better typability. For everything else, let the manager fill a 16-20 char random string — you never need to remember or type it.
