PDF to Image guide
Why extract images from a PDF?
Reuse figures from a paper you have rights to, pull charts into a presentation, post a single page as a picture where PDF previews would not render, or screenshot-proof a document by turning each page into an image others can't copy text from. Converting pages to images also freezes the layout โ fonts, spacing and colors render identically everywhere, which matters when sharing documents with people on unknown software.
Choosing the right resolution
The DPI scale controls how many pixels each page becomes. Screen use (chat apps, web uploads) is fine at 1x-1.5x; 2x handles most printing; 3x is for print shops or when the output will be cropped. Higher scales produce bigger files and slower rendering on very long documents โ export a 5-page range at 3x rather than a 200-page whole file.
| Scale | A4 page becomes | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 1x | โ 595 ร 842 px | Web previews, chat sharing |
| 2x | โ 1190 ร 1684 px | Office printing, presentations |
| 3x | โ 1785 ร 2526 px | Print shops, poster reproduction |
PNG or JPG for the output?
PNG is lossless and keeps text razor-sharp โ the default for documents, screenshots of forms, and anything with small type. JPG suits photo-heavy pages where slight softness is invisible and file size matters (scanned photo albums, magazine pages). When in doubt, PNG: it is the safer universal choice for text content.
