Static vs dynamic QR codes
A static QR code contains your destination directly — the URL is literally drawn in the pattern, so it works forever with zero dependency. "Dynamic" QR services encode a short redirect instead, letting you change the destination later — at the cost of the service staying alive, fees after trials, and the code dying when the company does. For menus, business cards, WiFi access and printed materials that will not change, static wins. Only choose dynamic when you genuinely need to re-point thousands of printed codes.
Error correction: pick L for size, H for tough environments
QR codes survive damage thanks to built-in Reed-Solomon error correction, at four levels. L recovers from ~7% damage and packs the most data; M ~15%; Q ~25%; H ~30% but with the densest pattern. Outdoor stickers, industrial labels and anything likely to get scuffed deserve H; clean digital displays and business cards are fine with L or M.
| Level | Damage recovery | Pattern density | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| L | ≈ 7% | Sparsest | Clean screens, short URLs |
| M | ≈ 15% | Balanced | General printing |
| Q | ≈ 25% | Denser | Labels, packaging |
| H | ≈ 30% | Densest | Outdoor, industrial, logo overlay |
Printing rules that prevent dead codes
Size the code to at least 2 × 2 cm for close scanning, 10+ cm for posters viewed from meters away. Keep strong contrast — dark modules on light background; inverted codes fail on many scanners. Always test-scan the final printed product with two different phones before committing a print run. Add the URL in small text below the code for people whose camera app balks.
